Privacy Policy

Last updated: April 20, 2026

I'm John Doe is an application for iPhone, iPad, and Mac that detects and masks personally identifiable information (PII) in text, entirely on your device. This policy describes — in plain language — what the app does and does not do with your data, and it applies identically on every platform.

1. Data we collect

None. Zero. Nothing. I'm John Doe does not collect, log, transmit, store, sell, or share any personal data — not the text you paste in, not your name, not your email, not even anonymous usage statistics. The app contains no analytics, no crash reporters, no advertising SDKs, no telemetry, no fingerprinting, and no third-party trackers of any kind.

This isn't a promise you have to take our word for. It's enforced by Apple's App Sandbox: the app's network access is disabled at the operating-system level (see section 2 below), so it physically cannot send anything anywhere, even if a future bug or a malicious actor tried to make it. Your text and settings stay on your device. Always.

Because there is no data to collect, there is also nothing to leak, nothing to subpoena, nothing to sell, and nothing for us to lose in a breach.

2. Network access

The app runs inside Apple's App Sandbox with network access explicitly disabled. iOS, iPadOS, and macOS will not allow the app to make outbound connections. You can verify this yourself by inspecting ImJohnDoe.entitlements — the key com.apple.security.network.client is set to false.

3. How PII detection works

All text analysis happens locally on your device, using:

No text you type or paste into the app is ever sent to any server — including no AI provider, no cloud service, and no external API.

4. Local storage

The app stores the following on your device only, using Apple's UserDefaults:

This data stays on your device. On iPhone and iPad, deleting the app removes all of its data with it. On Mac, dragging the app to the Trash leaves these preferences behind in ~/Library/Preferences/com.imjohndoe.ImJohnDoe.plist — delete that file if you want to remove them as well. Nothing is backed up to a remote server by the app.

5. Third parties

The app contains no third-party SDKs, no advertising frameworks, no social login, and no external services. The Swift package that builds it declares zero external dependencies — only Apple frameworks and our own code.

6. Privacy manifest

The app ships with an Apple Privacy Manifest (PrivacyInfo.xcprivacy) declaring a single API category — NSPrivacyAccessedAPICategoryUserDefaults — with the reason code CA92.1 (access only data from your own app's container). No tracking domains. No required reason APIs.

7. Changes to this policy

If this policy changes, the updated version will be posted on this page with a new "last updated" date. Because we collect no data to begin with, material changes are unlikely.

8. Marketing website (imjohndoe.com)

This privacy policy describes the iPhone, iPad, and Mac app. The marketing website at imjohndoe.com is a separate product surface and uses Google Tag (gtag.js) solely to measure the effectiveness of advertising — counting visits referred from ad campaigns and helping us understand which messages bring people to the site.

This applies only to your browser when visiting imjohndoe.com. The app on your iPhone, iPad, or Mac remains entirely offline, with no network access and no tracking of any kind. The two are technically isolated: nothing measured on the website is ever associated with your use of the app.

To opt out on the website, block analytics cookies in your browser, use private/incognito mode, or install a privacy-respecting browser extension. Doing so has no effect on the app.
